Samsung ups the ante on refrigerator storage capacity

If refrigerator storage capacity was a game of high-stakes poker, the pot would have grown again with the launch of the Samsung RF323TEDSPR, described by its manufacturer as the "largest capacity of all French Door refrigerators in its class." Testing is currently under way of the Samsung, along with a fleet of new models, in the Consumer Reports refrigerator labs.

The Samsung RF323TEDSPR, $3,500, claims 32 cubic feet of storage capacity. That's one cubic foot better than the previous largest-in-class models, the Kenmore Elite 7205[3], $2,800, and the LG LFX31925[ST], $3,000, which we tested earlier this year. They earned a place on our recommended list, on the strength of their excellent temperature performance and noise control—proof that bigger can be better. They're also quite energy efficient, thanks to innovative compressors, insulation, and other updates that have helped offset the increase in size.

It's worth noting that our Ratings include claimed capacity as well as usable capacity. The former is what manufacturers indicate on their product data sheets, while the latter is based on our measurements in the lab. A key difference between the two figures is that we include ice makers in our measurements, since they can cut into usable storage.

LG and Kenmore have started putting the ice maker in the refrigerator door on some models to squeeze more storage into the interior. The Samsung RF323TEDSPR uses the traditional design of the ice maker in the top left corner of the refrigerator, and it also features a second ice maker in the freezer. Between the two devices, it can produce up to 12 pounds of ice a day and store up to 10 pounds. That means a steady supply of ice cubes. It also suggests there's the potential for more room in the refrigerator—and that manufacturers haven't played their hand when it comes to the game of ever-increasing storage capacity.
