Consumer Reports finds plenty of exceptions to the old adage "you get what you pay for," with inexpensive products that outperform pricier competitors. But the handful of cut-rate toaster ovens in our latest report are not among them. A $20 toaster oven from Rival, for example, is near the bottom of our Ratings of more than 20 models, and low-priced offerings from Hamilton Beach and Kenmore didn't fare much better.
Sold at Walmart, the Rival TO-753 earned an overall score of 41 out of a possible 100 in our tests. Its baking and broiling performance were so-so, and the appliance was even worse at most toasting tasks. In terms of capacity, the Rival could fit neither a 12-inch pizza nor a 4-pound chicken, feats handled easily by other models in our Ratings.
The Hamilton Beach 31408, $50, and the Kenmore 19370, $40, performed somewhat better than the Rival. But their overall scores were hampered by lackluster one-slice toasting. Of course, if you prefer to make toast in a separate toaster, the Hamilton Beach could be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen since it was very good at baking and broiling in our tests.
But for a toaster oven that does it all, you'll need to open your wallet wider. The best toaster oven in our Ratings is the $250 Breville Smart Oven, which earned very good or better marks in each of of our performance tests. It's also easy to use and offers enough room for most large-scale toaster oven dishes. Another option is the Breville BOV650XL, which performed nearly as well as its top-rated brand mate for $180.
There's also one CR Best Buy in our toaster oven Ratings to consider, from Oster. It's harder to clean and operate than both Brevilles, but it's just as good at broiling and baking, and it also makes very good toast, whether a full batch or single slice. Costing $80, the Oster TSSTTVMNDG isn't exactly dirt cheap, but it should allow you to get your money's worth.
